How to Apply Turf Products Correctly: Avoiding Common Application Mistakes

Even the best turf products won’t perform if they’re applied incorrectly. From calibration issues to poor timing, application errors can lead to nutrient waste, turf damage, or inconsistent results across your playing surface.

Mistake 1: Incorrect Sprayer Calibration

Poor calibration can cause over- or under-application of fertilizers or herbicides. Regularly calibrate your sprayer to ensure accurate coverage rates based on nozzle output, pressure, and walking speed.

Tip: Use catch cups or calibration zones to verify actual output before each application.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Weather Conditions

Applying products in high heat, wind, or just before rain can reduce effectiveness or cause turf injury.

Avoid:

• Spraying during the hottest part of the day

• Applying before heavy rainfall

• Using products in high wind without drift control

Mistake 3: Skipping the Jar Test

Not all products are compatible. Mixing fertilizers, fungicides, and micronutrients without a jar test can cause clumping or clogging.
